This is the Salvia that is often listed as pineapple sage, Salvia rutilans. The large sticky leaves have a sweet fruity scent and flavor and are used in herbal teas. The bright red flowers appear in late autumn; it is one of the last plants to bloom in our garden and is relished by those late migrating hummingbirds. Established plants will die back to the ground in Zone 8, but resprout in late spring.
